The Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey founded Benedictine University in Chicago in 1887. Original students were of Czech and Slovak descent. The College moved to Lisle, Illinois in a beautiful campus atmosphere. It went coeducational in 1968 and was renamed Illinois Benedictine College in 1971. It became Benedictine University in 1996. Benedictine University belongs to the Association of Benedictine Colleges and Universities and is fully accredited. It is a private Roman Catholic university.
