Norwich University was founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge to be the first private military college in the United States. The Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey founded Benedictine University in Chicago in 1887. Original students were of Czech and Slovak descent. The College moved to Lisle, Illinois in a beautiful campus atmosphere. It went coeducational in 1968 and was renamed Illinois Benedictine College in 1971. It became Benedictine University in 1996.
