University Of Scranton:
In 1888, Bishop William G. O’Hara founded the Jesuit school Saint Thomas Aquinas College in the city of Scranton , Pennsylvania . While the school has always been privately owned, it has undergone a number of transformations.
In 1938, Saint Thomas Aquinas College qualified for placement in the list of American Universities, and changed its name to Saint Thomas Aquinas University. By 1942, Saint Thomas Aquinas University had become the University of Scranton . The University of Scranton remains an important part of the Association of Jesuit colleges and universities. Students at the University of Scranton can attend one of the university’s five different colleges.
The largest College at the University of Scranton is The College of Arts and Sciences. Most of its students are in their late teens or early twenties. Adult students and part time students attend the Dexter Hanley College . The remaining three Colleges include The Graduate School, the Arthur J. Kania School of Management and the J.A. Panuska, S.J., College of Professional Studies .
These five Colleges stretch over a 58 acre campus, and 25 new buildings have been added between 1984 and the present time, with another 24 buildings being renovated.
At the heart of the campus, students will find a plaque that clearly states what goal should be sought by those who attend a Jesuit University . Found on a memorial in Martyr’s Grove, the plaque carries the inscription: “What does it mean to be a Jesuit today? To commit yourself under the standard of the Cross to the crucial struggle of our time, the struggle for faith and the struggle for justice, which that same faith demands.”
Students at the University of Scranton have a chance to enroll in the Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Program. Enrollment in that program represents a willingness to tackle course work focused on philosophy, ethics, theology and rhetoric.
The largest percentage of students has chosen to major in biology, communications, business or physical therapy. All of the students, regardless of their major, must take core courses that satisfy certain general requirements. The core courses help students to improve their skill in public speaking, computer literacy and composition. Those core courses must be supplemented with 2 philosophy courses and 2 theology courses.
Completion of the core courses does not, however, represent fulfillment of the general education requirements. Those requirements include 6 credits in science, 12 credits in humanities, 6 credits in writing, 6 credits in cultural diversity, 3 credits in math and 3 credits in physical education. Completion of both the core courses and the general education requirements prepares each of the students for living a life that demonstrates commitment to Christian ideals.
