Stanford is a mid-sized, 4-year, non-profit university located in Stanford , California . Degrees offered include Bachelors, Masters, Post-Masters, First-Professional and Doctoral. Over 50 Doctoral degrees are awarded per year in over 15 disciplines. Graduate students predominate here, making up slightly over 65% of the student body in 2004. With nearly 19,000 students, Stanford is nonetheless a school with small and dedicated classes. Nearly all undergraduates and most post-baccalaureate students attend full-time.

Located in the small town of Stanford , California , the University is able to offer a mild climate and nearby recreational opportunities. The University itself is among the oldest in the West, founded in 1885. World-class scholarly and medical libraries are maintained on campus, as is a research hospital. Services and educational opportunities offered include academic career counseling, career placement, on-site day care and employment services for students.

There are a multitude of degree programs to choose from. These include offerings in the arts, biological sciences, social sciences, education, health, business and technology, as well as professional training. Courses are offered on a quarter system for a 12-week, immersion treatment of subject matter studied. Summer sessions are usually offered. Credit may be awarded for advanced-placement courses taken at the secondary-level.

Financial aid is made available to students from many sources. In 2004, 76% of undergraduates received some sort of financial aid, including an average institutional grant of over $17,000. Sources include:

Federal Pell Grant Program -- A grant program for undergraduate students with financial need.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) Program -- A Campus-Based Program providing grant assistance to needy undergraduate students. Priority is given to students who have exceptional financial need and are Federal Pell grant recipients.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program -- A campus-based, federally funded program that provides paid jobs for students with financial need.

Federal Perkins Loan Program - This campus-based loan program provides low-interest loans to students with financial need.

Federal Direct Loan Program -- A federal program in which the U.S. government provides loans to student and parent borrowers directly through schools.

Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program -- A federal loan program where commercial lenders loan to student and parent borrowers at reduced rates.

Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) Program -- A Title IV gift-aid program, this state and federal program awards scholarship or grant money to students demonstrating financial need.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program -- A Title IV financial aid program that makes scholarships available to full-time students with exceptional ability and promise.

The yearly tuition before any financial assistance averages out to slightly more than $30,000 for both full-time undergraduate and graduate students. Room and board is estimated at a little under $13,000 per year, on and off campus. Medicine and law programs may cost as much as $34,000 per year.

Admission test scores are required along with completion of a college preparatory program and verifiable references. In the 2004 academic year, almost all applicants submitted test scores, with over 98% taking the SAT. Over 30% sent the ACT as well. The average combined scores were about 1450 for the SAT and 31 on the ACT. Most undergraduates accepted were first time college students.

Stanford University is located at 1201 Welch Road , Stanford , California . The telephone number is 650-723-2300 and the website URL is http://www.stanford.edu. A $75 fee is charged for processing all applications.
