Pennsylvania State University - Penn St Great Valley:

Penn State University was founded in 1855 and welcomed its first class in 1859. It has gone through a number of name changes and metamorphoses over the last century and a half. Today it offers over 160 Bachelor’s degrees and 20 two-year Associate’s degrees. Its student body numbers approximately 80,000 and there are 5,000 full time faculty members. As a land grant university, it is obligated to perform outreach into the local community and serve the citizens of Pennsylvania.

A state school, the university naturally gives preference to Pennsylvania residents applying for admission. Most of its colleges require only a high school or equivalency diploma and the prerequisite number of credits in math, English and science. Certain business, science and engineering programs require additional advanced math and physics for admission.

More than 7,600 courses are offered for undergraduates, and over 3,700 courses are offered for graduate students. Certain graduate courses are open to undergraduates by special invitation. First year students may opt to enroll in the “Division of Undergraduate Studies” (DUS) for their first year, rather than registering to one of the university’s colleges. This special program allows students to explore a number of study options and fields, as well as to receive academic counseling, before deciding on a specific college or field of study.

Schreyer Honors College for academically exceptional students offers a program designed to challenge students’ capabilities and help them to better prepare for eventual graduate study or professional endeavors. Acceptance is based upon a high GPA in high school, along with excellent SAT scores and a strong motivation for a rigorous program of study.

Penn State offers degrees in the: natural and applied sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities and professions. Its programs are flexible and designed to accommodate both resident and commuter students enrolled full and part time. Students are provided with opportunities to gain real-life work experience along with credit through internships and similar programs.

Tuition for the entire 2006/7 year for Pennsylvania residents is as follows: The cost runs between $10,000-15,000 for undergraduates, $13,000-16,000 for graduates and $30,000 for medical students. Costs for non-Pennsylvania residents are considerably higher – nearly double for undergraduate study at some colleges and 50% more for some graduate study. In certain cases, such as Law School, the tuition remains the same.

Financial assistance is available from a number of sources including the government and the university. Penn State Scholarships are also available for full time students who complete a minimum number of credits per semester and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.00.

About one third of the Bachelors program at any Penn State college will include General Education course requirements. This is done so that students will receive a well-rounded education in addition to the studies related to their chosen majors. General Education courses will develop communication skills and quantitative abilities and offer a broad range of basic knowledge in humanities, arts and sciences. A First Year Seminar introduces students to Penn State’s many resources and to the expectations levied upon them, and is intended to ease the transition into university life.
