Grand Canyon University:

Grand Canyon University was originally established as a Teacher’s College in 1949, and has been providing rigorous and high quality preparation for teachers and administrators ever since. The College of Education boasts a 99% placement rate for its graduates. This division of GCU offers three Bachelor of Science degrees with emphases in Elementary (K-8) Mathematics, English and Science and one in Special Education. In addition, there are no fewer than sixteen different Masters programs for educators seeking to take their careers to the next level. These range from the Master of Arts in Teaching to specialized degrees in Administration, Elementary and Secondary education.

Grand Canyon University ’s College of Nursing offers several comprehensive programs. For those seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, there are traditional as well as Fast Track and Accelerated options of study, and an RN to BSN program as well. Beyond that, the College of Nursing offers five different Master of Science Degrees. Candidates may choose from Family Practice, Leadership, Clinical Specialist with or without an education emphasis and a Nursing Education Track for those interested in teaching the next generation of nurses.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the foundation of the University. Regardless of major, all four-year students at Grand Canyon University will take classes at this college as part of their core curriculum. Courses offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences include biology, chemistry, religious studies, communications, English, history, psychology and public safety. In addition to providing a foundation for coursework in other majors, any of these subject areas may be selected as a major in itself. Twenty-six Bachelor’s degree programs are offered here, as well as the “Undeclared Major,” which allows students some latitude in designing their own curriculum.

The Ken Blanchard College of Business offers Bachelor of Science Degrees in Accounting, Management, Administration and Marketing in addition to MBA degrees with a choice of nine different emphases ranging from Accounting to Marketing. Candidates may also choose the Master of Science in Leadership with an optional emphasis in Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Management.

In addition to rigorous academics, GCU offers many opportunities for student athletes. It is an NCAA Division II school, and “Antelope” teams compete in most major sports. At least one GCU alumnus has gone on to play major league baseball. At present, GCU offers a number of intramural sports that includes Football, Volleyball, Basketball and Softball. Students may sign up for sports their first day on campus. The University is planning to add at least nine more athletic sports for men and women over the coming year.

Grand Canyon University is considered a Class I institution that offers degrees at the master’s level and awards at least forty of these across three or more disciplines every year. This institution uses the semester system which consists of two academic sessions, approximately sixteen weeks in length.

Currently, the GCU campus underwent some extensive renovations to upgrade its architecture and technology, as well as major landscaping. The campus now has the latest in computer and educational technology, and has been attractively, yet ecologically landscaped using plants native to north central Arizona . A new Courtyard Mall is planned for sometime in 2007.
